Hilo Colt ousted at West Zone

Hilo Colt went down but not with out a fight.

Two days after a TKO loss to Los Gatos, Calif., at the PONY West Zone 15U tournament, Hilo hung in before being getting eliminated with a 6-5 loss in San Jose, Calif.

Donald Saltiban and Nainoa Kane-Yates each finished with two hits, while Delvin Ongais-Kilaulani provided a quality start against Los Gatos, a perennial Colt power which beat Hilo 15-0 on Saturday.

“The kids played above their levels,” coach Tony De Sa said. “Left it on the field.”

Wood Bat Academy slated

The Big Island Wood Bat Academy (formerly known as Big Island Baseball), under the direction of Kaha Wong, is taking applications for its upcoming wood bat season for ages 7 and up (post-high school).

Baseball camp at UH-Hilo

The 2017 Paradise Baseball Camp Summer Prospect Camp will be held Thursday and Friday at UH-Hilo stadium.

The camp will be run by Waiakea graduate and Northern Colorado assistant Kainoa Correa and Big Island Wood Bat Academy coach Kaha Wong, along with 11 instructors/recruiters from Northern Colorado (Division I), Yale (D-I), Hawaii Pacific (D-II), UHH (D-II), Puget Sound (D-III), Whitworth (D-III), Pacific (D-III), William Jessup (NAIA), Pierce College (JC, Wash.), Centralia (JC, Wash.), Weather ford (JC, Texas).

From 4-9 Thursday, drills and evaluations will be held; from 4-10 p.m. Friday, final drills and evaluations along with a scrimmage are on the slate.

Cost of the two-day camp is $180.

Special Olympics golf outing

Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf will be holding its 10th annual golf tournament Aug. 27 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Banyans Golf Club.

The format will be a four-man modified scramble, and each group will include a Special Olympics athlete.

Entry fee is $150 per golfer, Special Olympians play for free, which includes a round of golf, cart, lunch, and 19th-holeawards and prizes.

All proceeds go to Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf Program.

According to a release, 12 athletes are playing and are eager to compete. The field is limited to 48 players.
